Tax Relief, VAT Exemption, Tax Deductions: Tinubu Endorses NGE’s Proposals

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday gave a nod to the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) proposals aimed at revitalizing the struggling media sector.

During the 21st All Nigeria Editors Conference (ANEC) at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, President Tinubu openly endorsed the Guild’s call for corporate tax relief, VAT exemptions, tax deductions, and affordable financing to help media organizations weather the storm of Nigeria’s harsh economic realities.

The President, in his address, emphasized that the media must continue playing its vital role in democracy but cautioned that misinformation and sensationalism pose risks to national unity and stability. “As your President, I endorse your proposal. Your request is in my pocket,” Tinubu said, responding to the Guild’s call for relief.

The President also reiterated his government’s commitment to restoring economic stability and attracting investments, despite the tough reform measures which are essential to curb corruption and rebuild Nigeria’s economic foundation.

Earlier, NGE President, Mr. Eze Anaba, expressed concern about the media sector’s financial challenges and appealed to the President to implement tax breaks and reforms. Tinubu’s endorsement of these proposals signals a potential shift in policy that could provide much-needed relief to the industry.

Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, in his keynote address, reminded the editors of their unique role in shaping the nation’s democratic future. He stressed that the media could either unify the country or divide it based on the narratives it chose to propagate.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, commended President Tinubu for attending the conference, marking a historic first. He assured the editors that the government would carefully consider their proposals, focusing on strengthening infrastructure, improving social services, and supporting media digitalization.

With the President’s endorsement, the media sector can now look forward to potential reforms that will help it navigate these challenging economic times.
